Switch Sold Over 1 Million Units in Japan, ARMS Leading Sales For Past Week

We typically don’t cover sales figures unless there is something noteworthy about them, and today is one of those days. According to sales aggregation site dengekionline.com, the Nintendo Switch moved about 140,000 or so units this past week in Japan, bringing the year to date total in Japan up to 1,038,439 units. For comparisons sake, the Wii U sold just under 3.5 million units over the course of 55 months on the market.

At the current pace, Switch will pass the Wii U’s total market in Japan after being on it for just 10 months. The pace may even quicken, as mega hits in Japan in Splatoon 2 and Monster Hunter XX are set to release the next two months.

Here’s a look at where things stand for this past week in Japan:

Breath of the Wild‘s cumulative sales between Switch and Wii U top 600,000 making it one of the most successful Zelda games in Japan in a long, long time. The last game to top those numbers in Japan was Phantom Hourglass at around 950,000 units in Japan. The last home console game (that wasn’t a re-release) to top Breath of the Wild in Japan was The Wind Waker at 890,000 units. Lifetime sales of the game do have a chance to pass that number years down the road, which would make it the best selling Zelda title in Japan for home consoles since… Ocarina of Time. Either way, that’s impressive sales.

In other Nintendo Switch game sale news, ARMS had a solid launch and naturally was the leading factor for the increased Switch sales. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to be a strong performing game, while 1 2 Switch seems to be tapering off. 3DS games continue to do amazing numbers, and what is encouraging is the near 2 million in sales for Monster Hunter Double Cross. It has the real potential once the Switch version comes out to become Japan’s first million seller title for Switch.

For as well as Nintendo is doing here in North America, it’s important we recognize that it’s absolutely dominating in Japan, Nintendo’s home market.
