Nintendo Releases an Official Statement on Banning Pokémon Sun and Moon Piraters

Earlier this week we talked about Nintendo banning players who downloaded an illegal copy of Pokémon Sun and Moon. Nintendo has now released an official statement on the matter:

“As a result of a number of Nintendo 3DS users using unauthorized versions of several games, and connecting to the official game servers in violation of our terms of service, these users’ Nintendo 3DS systems that stored the unauthorized game code have been banned from Nintendo’s online network effective immediately.”

Does the punishment fit the crime? Nintendo thinks so. Many people that have been looking forward to this game, unbeknownst to them, have stumbled across spoilers. This has unfortunately ruined the experience for many players. Pokémon Sun and Moon is set to release tomorrow.

Honestly, what did they expect? They were doing something illegal, and they know they were breaking their terms and use agreement. Nintendo is well within their rights to restrict their services.

If it was up to me, their systems would be bricked entirely. They’re lucky I’m not in charge.

I think they would be within their rights to ban the ACCOUNT for THAT PARTICULAR GAME, but not the entire account, and certainly not the system itself. By banning the account, they basically stole from the people who pirated the game if they have any bought games. 2 wrongs don’t make a right and all that. By banning the system, you know these people are just going to turn around, sell the system, buy a new one, and some poor sap is going to get screwed out of their money.

maybe, but there is a terms of service and if you choose to pirate and STEAL and ignore those terms you agreed to you are liable. Therefore its justifiable.

You didn’t get what the point was, they are saying the system is banned, not the account, not the person, the system, so the person who got the system banned will just sell the system and screw over the person who bought it.

Tough shit for them. Why the hell would they connect to the server with a pirated version of the game…
