Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Sold Over 1 Million Units During April

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was apparently a smart porting decision by Nintendo. While some thought it possibly wouldn’t sell well due to originally releasing on the Wii U, initial sales have come in and it paints a pretty rosy picture for the new game. With only 3 total days on the market in April, the game has already surpassed 1 million unit sales world wide. By now, a mere week out from launch (almost), the game may be at 1.5 million world wide or higher.

This is according to Daniel Ahmed, a video game analyst for Niko Partners. In a tweet he notes that Persona 5 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have joined the million seller list for the month April, likely using insider reports (sales data from various companies) as this is a statement rather than a projection.

In hindsight, this shouldn’t be surprising. Even as a Wii U owner, I bought a copy specifically for battle mode and in earnest, the Wii U audience overall was pretty small. It already feels like there is a lot more buzz and excitement surrounding the Switch with an already thriving community, despite probably only having just north of 3 million or so owners at this point in time.
