That was fast. First, Breath of the Wild became Nintendo’s fastest selling console launch game ever in North America and now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has set a new record in terms of day one sales, becoming the fastest selling Mario Kart game ever released. It sold 459,000 copies the day of release in North America, beating out the previous launch record of Mario Kart Wii, which sold 433,900 units in the same region day one. What does this ultimately mean? 1 out of every 2 Switch owners bought the game day one, with a likely higher number after (I know I bought my copy a couple days after launch). The total attach rate will likely not reach Breath of the Wild numbers (90%+), but this is still highly impressive given how small the relative install base is for the system in comparison to the Wii.
Of course, both Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have a long ways to go to become the best selling games in their respective series, but it’s hard to be upset at the pace they are maintaining right now.
