This was the week we’ve been waiting for…the sales results of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet in their opening weekend and wow did the duo deliver! Over 2.5 million physical copies of the games sold (second only to the 2,637,285 that Pokémon Black and Pokémon White opened to, back in 2010 on the Nintendo DS). More impressive than the physical-only sales, were the total sales (digital copies added in), which equaled a mind-blowing 4,050,000 copies! This is a new record for Japan.
As a bonus, we also learned that this pair sold over 10 million units world wide…a new record for a game exclusive to a Nintendo platform. Second bonus and also an exclusive, I learned that for the week ending November 20th, over 500,000 Nintendo Switch systems were sold world wide. That is already an impressive figure, but when you consider that the console is 68.5 months old, it’s phenomenal.
Back on the Japan side of things, Nintendo Switch sold 170,693 units, topping what it did last year for the same week (167,778) and hitting 4 million for the year. My claim for 2022 was that it would sell a guaranteed 4 million, also passing 4.5m. Can it do 5 million for a third year in a row? Possibly…but it’s going to be close.
Meanwhile, PlayStation 5 will clear 1 million in Japan for the year, in a few more weeks and Xbox Series, 150,000 in the country, for 2022.
Another fun stat, Nintendo Switch has now sold 26.92 million units in Japan, which is only 6 million behind Nintendo DS’s total. What was once thought by many to be too far ahead of a console to reach, by the end of this year, the gap will close by another several hundred thousand. Exciting times.
Fun one, right? See you next week!
Oh wait…you were wondering about that 117 million figure, right!? As of November 24th, Nintendo has now sold more than 117 million Nintendo Switch consoles world wide and likely by the end of the day/for sure by the end of Black Friday, will have passed PlayStation 4’s total (if it hasn’t already done so). Game Boy is next with 118.69 million, a total that Nintendo Switch will surpass before December 18th. Here’s to more numbers!
